I paint what inspires me. With my paintings, I seek to transport the viewer to another place and time; to transform the observer into participant. As a ‘scape artist, I am captivated by Nature’s dynamic displays: the sky right before the deluge; a crashing, stormy sea; the dramatic interplay of light and color. My paintings are informed by the mood created when colors contrast within a vibrant atmosphere.
When I retired and began to pursue my passion, I focused on cloudscapes. In the ensuing years, I turned my attention to the sea. Like a blazing fire, the sea is hypnotic. She is alluring and seductive, inviting us to peer into her depths, each wave a beckoning, crooked finger as it rolls onto the sand. I paint with oils on stretched canvas and use glazing techniques to capture both the depth and luminescence of light, reflecting it to the viewer so they are compelled to return. I seek to isolate that moment when nothing exists but the observer and their experience with the subject.
I film the sea from various perches on the Oregon Coast, and extract still photographs to use in the compositions I complete in my studio. I recently participated in my first show, the 2016 Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts.
