September 25 – December 8, 2017

Becky Land
As a native Oregonian, Becky Land has a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.  For an artist like herself, there are endless subjects to paint, and she finds inspiration everywhere she goes.

Becky’s work is representational and focuses primarily on still life and landscape subjects.  She uses traditional painting methods, and her style currently leans more towards realism than impressionism.  Becky finds that her ongoing challenge as an artist is to capture the essence of a subject without being too literal.  Mastering impressionism is her ultimate goal as an artist.

Though Becky’s read a lot about painting technique and theory over the years, she has only recently started focusing on painting as a serious pursuit. She began working with watercolor about eight years ago and just started working in oil last year.  She particularly enjoys the sculptural quality of oil paint and how easy it is to become immersed in the painting process.

Becky’s decision to focus on art as a potential career was made in 2014 when she participated in her first art show, the Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts.  Having sold her first painting at that show encouraged her to jump in with both feet.  Each year, Becky pushes herself to spend more time painting and getting her art out there for others to see.

JF “Juliet” Warren
JF “Juliet” Warren began to take an interest in learning to make art when she discovered Betty White’s revolutionary book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.  She read it, worked on the exercises, and thought to herself, “This is something I might be able to learn; I’d sure like to try it someday”.

Years later, the opportunity came for Juliet to pursue learning to draw and paint:  She had time to devote to it and, with the burgeoning participation of artists on the Internet, allowed for an unprecedented ready access to information for self-study.  Now Juliet’s happily absorbed with the enjoyable and never-ending process of learning to express herself through painting.  The many other artists who successfully learned to make art after a late start, including Anna Mary Moses and Mary Granville Delany, are an inspiration to her.

Using mainly pastels, inks, and watercolors, Juliet paints intriguing things she observes, attempting to capture their essence for future reminiscence.  But how does she paint a rising spring breeze, the sweetness of my friend’s puppy sacked out on the laundry, or the shock and awe of tens of thousands of migrating snow geese spiraling into the sun at the foot of the Cascades?   That’s her quest, finding ways to effectively employ colors and shapes and compositions, that most appeal to her in order to capture and share these beautiful moods and things the way she experienced them.
