April 15, 2 pm
The Lost Treasures Collection, a series of rarely performed musical gems performed in concert/cabaret version on Lakewood Theatre Company’s Side Door stage, presents the third offering in its 7th season, How Now, Dow Jones, a musical comedy with music by Academy Award-winner Elmer Bernstein, lyrics by Tony Award nominee Carolyn Leigh and book by Max Shulman. Food, wine and other beverages will be available for purchase before and during the show.
Each show in the series is presented script-in-hand, with minimal staging. No sets, no props (free from the usual trappings of a fully staged production). Food and beverages are available for purchase before and during the show.
The Story: How Now, Dow Jones, set on Wall Street, follows Kate (Lena Moon) who announces the Dow Jones numbers. The plot, however, can’t conceal its 1960s origins. Kate has been waiting years for a marriage proposal, but her broker beau Herbert (Jesse Miller) won’t pop the question until the Dow hits 1,000. In a hurry to wed, she fraudulently announces the Dow has topped 1,000, and market mayhem ensues.
In the 1960s, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, an index of 30 blue-chip industrial stocks, typically hovered around 700. The Dow briefly broke 1,000 for one historic day in 1972 before a surge that began in 1983 sent the average soaring to its present heights.
