The Mary’s Woods 2018 Music in the Woods concert series promises an array of musical wonders from artists both familiar and new.
A Mighty Wind – music for every wind instrument in the orchestra, solo, duet, five at a time, you name it, including the splendid Sextet of Francis Poulenc. The Chameleon Winds, led by flutist Abby Mages. You’ll be “blown away.”
Cellato! – So many cellos, it will seem like dessert! Portland cellist Justin Kagan has played our series every year from the get-go. Now he gets to bring along cellist friends for a cello-overwhelm, both wild and suave, just what we always expect from Justin.
A magic beyond all we do here! – For everyone who has ever had that wonderful, transformative experience of hearing voluptuous, transcendental choir music in a great cathedral, we present The Ensemble, Oregon’s acclaimed vocal chamber group, led by Patrick McDonough, in a program of grandeur and gracefulness, solace and exultation.
Twenty fingers and sweet songs of love – Music in the Woods favorite Lisa Mooyman, soprano, and renowned Portland pianist Janet Coleman are cooking up the best mix imaginable by inviting favorite collaborators, both vocal and instrumental, for a concert of many combinations, including Brahms’s Love Song (Liebelieder) Waltzes. (It takes four singers and two pianists – 20 fingers – get it?)
“A violinist walks into a bar . . . .” Actually, the incomparable Portland violinist Paloma Griffin Hebert walked into our chapel about two years ago to play in ensemble for one of our Music in the Woods concerts and has forever after wanted to come back for a solo-plus-friends program. You’ll be thrilled with her choices.
“Give me more of that jazz!” – Back by popular demand is no cliché here. We had to have the return engagement of the MJ New Quartet (pianist Darrell Grant and his wonderful colleagues) after their astonishing program in May, 2017. You will hear them at the Mary’s Woods gala in December, 2017, too, but why not have too much of a good thing! Suave, sophisticated, delicious, tuneful, lively . . . what’s not to love?
