Artist: Shelly Caldwell
Medium: Mixed Media Assembly with Painting
Product: Golden Acrylics, E6000, Aves Epoxy
I am attracted to the weather worn, the lost and left out. These are the pieces of ourselves we leave behind.
They hint at meanings, at lost stories, at a time when they were new and had a purpose. I enjoy the
challenge of creating a cohesive narrative with seemingly unrelated and random jetsam. I see beauty in objects wasted by time and given over to the elements.

Medium: Watermedia Painting
Product: American Easel Panels & Watercolor
This year I’ll demo a new product — watercolor surface on wood cradled panels by American Easel. I will also demo how to paint over panels that have already been printed with my drawings, a COLOR BY ME series of botanicals from the Chinese Garden. And I’ll display work painted in watercolor over gold gessoed and marbled backgrounds – some of this series will be part of a show at the Chinese Garden. I’ll also talk about how I use acrylic mediums to assemble collage paintings and to protect and seal watercolor paintings.

This versatile media is easy and fun for students and professional artists. It can be used on fabric, paper, wood, and leather. Rich luminous and brilliant colors have a “soft hand”. Prints can be made with blocks, silk screen and stencils. Paint flows beautifully for hand painting.

Medium: Pastels on Sanded Paper
Product: Variety of pastels and pastel pencils
I am in love with pastels! Why? I love the spontaneity of the medium. In my opinion there is no better medium to learn color and value. I love the ‘what you see is what you get’ way the medium handles.
My demo will illustrate a mixed media approach to pastel painting using sanded paper. I will be using Golden Fluid Acrylics in the underpainting. Then I create a beautiful rich and luminous effect by building up layers from dark to light, using a variety of hard and soft pastels and pastel pencils.

Visualize Your Ideas on Paper!
That great idea in your head might never be realized if no one else can see it. Visualization is the art of converting that image in your mind’s eye into something tangible. It may be a sketch, a painting, or clay model. Turn your vision into something others can see. Chas Martin demonstrates materials and techniques to help you see, touch, analyze and realize your ideas more clearly. It’s the most critical step between inspiration and masterpiece.
