Think of the ghostly imprints left on a sidewalk by fallen leaves. Or the lovely colors of flower petals imbedded on a piece of paper.
Eco-printing – also referred to as contact dyeing – is a technique that employs the gifts of nature: leaves, barks, lichens, flowers, minerals, and other materials. Selected materials are rolled, bundled or wrapped into fabrics, then secured tightly, in the fashion of Japanese shibori. The items are steamed or immersed in water, then cooled and unwrapped. The resulting impressions on the fabrics can be glorious and breathtaking!
No synthetics or chemicals are used, and water waste is minimal, which renders this process environmentally conscious and socially responsible.
In this class, Debbie Ellis will guide you in creating your own exquisite and very unique impressions on silk, wool, cotton and paper. You will use a variety of plant materials, including, but not limited to, ferns, walnut, eucalyptus, and flower petals. The magical influence of minerals, such as iron oxide and metal (think RR spikes, iron bars!) will also be employed for those who wish to use them.
You will print and take home at least one ready-to-wear silk scarf, as well as paper and additional wool, silk and cotton fabrics, which you can use in other creative projects, such as quilting, appliqué, weaving, book arts, etc.
All supplies included.
1:30 – 3:30 pm
“GOLDEN Grounds for Drawing and Painting”
with Corrine Loomis Dietz
Limited Space – $35
Bored with white paper? Would you like the option to paint and draw simultaneously?
This mini workshop will explore these foundations: Coarse Molding Paste, Iridescent Micaceous Iron Oxide, Crackle Paste, and a smooth Silver Point drawing ground. These acrylic surfaces can be applied to canvas, wood panel and paper and vary in hardness, tooth and transparency. The surface possibilities are endless — accepting tints, washes and layers of paint, plus marks & scribbles to fine drawing techniques. Ground offers unique characteristics that accept a range of dry media: pencil, charcoal, chalk, oil pastel, etc. Add another layer of depth to your artistic voice!
All paints, mediums, gels and grounds supplied by GOLDEN Artist Colors. Mixed media paper supplied by Strathmore
Please bring your favorite dry media: pencil, colored pencil, oil pastel, conte crayon and/or soft pastel.
