West Linn Public Library

West Linn, OR
Installed March 2014

Artists:  Jennifer Cutshall
Budget: $6,000

Project Description / Scope of work
The West Linn Public Library, in partnership with the Clackamas County Arts Alliance, was seeking qualifications from Artists or Artist teams to create an interior mural in an open stairwell which links the main floor adult area to the lower level children and teen sections of the library. This is a high traffic space with good visibility from many vantage points both inside the library and from the exterior patio sculpture garden and new rear parking lot.   One artist had the opportunity to work with the Art Committee to design a concept for this wall. Dedication of the mural is scheduled for March of 2014 and is one element of the Library celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Project Background
The West Linn Public Library is a vibrant and vital part of life in West Linn and will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in March of 2014.  Positioned to meet the educational, informational, cultural and recreational interests of the public, the library provides free and open access to a wide variety of materials and programs.

Since opening its doors in 1939 with a collection of 350 books and two magazine subscriptions, the West Linn Public Library has grown with the West Linn community and is now a welcoming 28,000 square foot facility with two public meeting rooms, a public art gallery, two computer labs and wireless access throughout the building. The library collection includes print and online resources, including more than 113,000 materials in a wide variety of formats, 279 periodical subscriptions, and 38 licensed databases.

The Library has recently expanded its parking to include a rear lot which allowed for this project to be developed through the West Linn Percent for Art policy.  The path from the new parking lot to the rear entrance of the building provides another viewing opportunity for the mural through floor-to-ceiling windows.
