Doing pencil drawing for many years, then he added charcoal and then colored pencil. In 1999 to 2000 Dennis enrolled in three terms of life drawing at Portland Community College, after that he enrolled in three terms of watercolor from 2000 to 2001. Dennis is drawn to realism, not just for the challenge of trying to copy something, but the excitement of building a painting from nothing. His desire to paint never changes, just driving down a road watching the trees go by, watching the light pass through the trees, and thinking how that would make a great painting.
