17th Annual Writers Night
Presented by Estacada Area Arts Commission
Saturday, April 20, 2019
7 pm – 9 pm
24591 S. Springwater Rd.
This year’s event will feature hosts Joanna Rose and Stevan Allred, memoirist Brian M. Biggs of Redland, and Estacada writer Tanisha Wallace Porath. Writers Night is free and open to the public. “Unintended Consequences” will take our audience into the challenges of parenting a teenager with Tanisha Wallace Porath’s piece “Almost Sixteen.”
Brian M. Biggs will read from his forthcoming memoir, Prove My Soul: Another Side to the Vietnam War (Hellgate Press, June 2019). Biggs was stationed in Vietnam as a marine lieutenant 1966-67, where he was in the front lines of the “winning hearts and minds” part of the war effort, and he went back to Vietnam three times in the early 2000’s to visit the Vietnamese people he knew during the war. As is so often the case when cultures collide, unintended consequences were abundant.
Joanna Rose will read from an essay about her childhood. When her mother gave her a copy of Alice in Wonderland, she probably didn’t expect Joanna to go down the rabbit hole. That rabbit hole had far-reaching consequences that inform Joanna’s day-to-day life even now.
Stevan Allred will read from his recently published novel, The Alehouse at the End of World (Forest Avenue Press, November 2018). Alehouse takes readers to the Isle of the Dead, where nothing about the afterlife is quite what we expect.
