SUMMARY:Blacksmithing: Forged Bamboo Desk Lamp
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day workshop kicks off our annual Blacksmith Week. It focuses on designing and forging a sculptural desk lamp inspired by the form and growth of bamboo. The class is geared toward students with intermediate forging skills who are ready to combine traditional hand forging with light fabrication techniques. \nOver the course of two 6-hour days\, students will complete a fully functional forged steel desk fixture\, including a wired socket and base. \nSkills Covered– \nParticipants will deepen their skills in both forging and fabrication\, including: \nForging controlled tapers and organic forms\nUpsetting and isolating material for bamboo “nodes”\nHot piercing and shaping irregular openings\nRiveting and mechanical assembly\nForging and texturing leaf forms\nBasic fabrication techniques:\nDrilling\nTapping\nWelding (MIG or stick\, depending on shop setup)\nLayout and proportional design for functional objects\nBasic lamp wiring and socket installation \nMaterials & Construction–\nStudents will work with the following materials: \n3/8” steel plate for the base\n3/8” round stock for forged leaves\n3/4” Schedule 40 pipe for the bamboo stalk\nLamp socket and wiring components (provided) \nThe project emphasizes intentional surface texture\, clean joinery\, and thoughtful transitions between forged and fabricated elements. \nFinished Project:\nBy the end of the class\, each student will leave with:\nA completed forged steel desk lamp\nA deeper understanding of combining sculptural forging with functional design\nPractical experience integrating electrical components

However\, gallery representation is not for everyone\, and it requires intentionality\, focus and clear expectations. In this session\, Daria Loi\, Founder and Director of Imperfecta Gallery\, will share perspectives on how to join a gallery and how to thrive through a healthy gallerist-artist relationship. This interactive\, informal workshop will equip attendees with tips to identify whether gallery representation is for them\, how to approach galleries\, and how to ensure their relationship with gallerists brings mutual benefits and opportunities to grow and shine. \nABOUT: The Clackamas Arts Alliance offers its Makers & Creative Artists Workshop series throughout the year. Besides showcasing her work globally\, Dr. Loi has published 80+ articles\, co-edited the Routledge International Handbook of Contemporary Participatory Design\, holds 10+ patents and is columnist for ACM Interactions. She mentors emerging artists and innovators and is on the board and executive council for a number of non-profits.
