SUMMARY:Stairwell Gallery: Beverly & Arthur Foster: Life and Death in a Potsdam Garden
DESCRIPTION:Beverly Chesnut Foster’s compelling photographic artistry brings a hidden chapter of Potsdam\, Germany\, to light. From 1933 to 1945\, horticulturists Karl and Eva Foerster cultivated a garden of extraordinary beauty that quietly became a sanctuary during the rise of Nazi terror. Within 3 its peaceful paths and borders\, several Jewish women found a way to hide in plain sight as deportations and death camps threatened their lives. Beverly Chesnut Foster explores the tension between danger and refuge with her lens\, capturing the interplay of fear\, resilience\, and quiet defiance embedded in the garden’s past. The accompanying narrative\, written by her husband Arthur Foster\, a former colleague of the Foersters and a former Berlin professor\, provides historical context that deepens the emotional resonance of Beverly’s work. The exhibition will be on view throughout July during regular library hours. Lake Oswego Public Library is located at 706 Fourth Street\, Lake Oswego. SUMMARY:Natural History Book Group
DESCRIPTION:The Natural History Book Group was founded on the recognition that Indigenous peoples have maintained a deep and reciprocal relationship with the land now known as Lake Oswego for millennia\, the group acknowledges this history as an essential grounding for its work. Through participant-selected readings that focus on Traditional Ecological Knowledge\, members explore how literature and nonfiction can deepen our understanding of the watershed and its indigenous history\, while inspiring practical steps toward a more just relationship with both the land we call home and its original caretakers. \nLed by the Oswego Lake Watershed Council\, this group meets bi-monthly on the second Tuesday of every other month (January\, March\, May\, July\, September\, and November) at 5:00pm. We meet at the Lake Oswego Public Library in the second-floor conference room. SUMMARY:Pints from the Past: Displacing Black Portland - A History of Housing Discrimination
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another Pints from the Past Program at the Lake Theater & Cafe! This month’s discussions is presented by Mariah Rocker with the Oregon Black Pioneers\, titled ‘Displacing Black Portland: A History of Housing Discrimination.’ \n“People of African descent have called Portland home since the earliest days of non-Native settlement. However\, policies of systemic racism have led to waves of displacement and demolition within the city’s historically Black neighborhoods. The ripple effects of generations of housing discrimination continue to shape Portland’s demographics and Black Portlanders’ opportunities within a rapidly gentrifying city. \nThis program is offered by the Lake Oswego Public Library in cooperation with the Lake Theater & Café. Admission is free and no ticket is required (though food and drink purchase is encouraged to offset the cost to the Lake Theater). Doors open at 6:30\, the presentation begins at 7:00. The Lake Theater & Café is located at 106 North State Street in Lake Oswego.
