Milwaukie High School’s state-of-the-art Health and Wellness Center got a little flare recently thanks to a colorful new three-panel mural by nationally known artist and Milwaukie High School graduate, Chris Haberman.
At a cozy gathering celebrating the installation of the mural, Haberman spoke of how grateful he was for the opportunity to “give back” to his high school alma mater. He spoke fondly of past teachers and reminisced about taking wood shop in the very space that is now the Health and Wellness Center. Haberman explained that his parents and many aunts and uncles had attended MHS and all had a love for the local community.
The vibrant new mural liberally uses the school colors of maroon and gold—along with a cacophony of other colors and textures. The captivating mural includes various symbols and details that pay homage to the high school, student life and the city. Chris also included memories from his own time at MHS—including staff he fondly remembers.
Haberman is a home-grown success story. Now a nationally known artist, he has installed more than 20 murals and completed over 10,000 individual art works. He is the co-owner of The Peoples Art of Portland—a gallery at Pioneer Place Mall—and has been featured on Oregon Art Beat. He is also known for giving back to the local community.
