SUMMARY:Learn to garden with beneficial insects and paint with cockroaches!
DESCRIPTION:During this workshop\, we will learn all about the good insects in your garden and how to encourage their presence. We know about how great ladybugs and praying mantids are\, but did you know there are many more awesome critters out there that can help eat those pesky caterpillars and aphids? Students will also receive several handouts that contain helpful resources and information on beneficial insects and pollinators. Next\, we will check out some pre-collected beneficial arthropods\, and then take a little field trip to see what we can find around the garden. Finally\, we will paint with giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches!\n*This class is for ages 10+. Limited spaces available\, sign up today!

SUMMARY:Natural Dyes Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Open to Clackamas County artists to attend \nOur world is full of all kinds of natural materials that can used as dyes\, including some insects! Learn about several of these materials that can be found in the forest and at the store\, and also how to prepare them to make your very own fabric dyes!\nAfter our lesson we will get to dye bandanas with a vibrant magenta dye made from cochineal scale\, which has a very fascinating and ancient history behind its use. \nAbout the instructor: Heather Andrews is a research entomologist at Oregon State University. She works at a university extension office in Aurora where she studies growing practices in orchard crops that minimize their negative impact on the environment while maximizing yield. In her free time she makes jewelry\, draws and also plays the harp.

SUMMARY:Native Bees Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled workshop where we’ll learn all about native bees. These insects play essential roles in maintaining a balanced ecosystem and are important for pollinating all kinds of plants. But did you know that we have over 4\,000 native bees right here in North America\, and that many species nest in the ground or plant stems?\nWe’ll start out the class with a lesson on the different types of native bees here in the Willamette Valley\, and the various kinds of habitat they need. Then we will decorate mason bee houses. Students will also receive several mason bee cocoons to start their own colony\, seed packets to plant native flowers in their yard\, plenty of information on native bees\, and a poster with the different native bees found right here in Oregon.\nRegistration is now open!\nPlease register by emailing the instructor Heather Andrews\, at handrews189@gmail.com\nSaturday\, March 21st\, 12:00 – 1:30 pm
