The way that I approach wood burning is to draw my subject out first, then lay in all of my darks with wood burning, many times using hatching and similar mark-making to create larger areas of tone. I will be showing how to do this, and including finished pieces for people to see to further understand my process.

Medium: Watercolor & Collage with Acrylic Finish on Wood
Collage is a contemporary and very accessible medium that can take many different forms. Combine watercolor painting and marbled, stamped or other handmade papers with found materials such as maps and the results are amazing! I’ll show a video on making citrasolv paper and introduce my process for tearing or cutting and constructing a piece, including the materials to complete a collage painting on a wood panel.

I love to paint and I love to draw. Pastels offer the best of both worlds. I use the hard pastels to lay in a foundation of color and moisten them with Gamsol to create a vibrant base underpainting on sanded paper. Once this dries I can build up many beautiful layers of rich and luminous color using various brands of soft pastels.

I’ll also be showing how I use water in my work to alter and manipulate the paint, including using the rain and recycled rain water.

Medium: Chinese Brush Painting
I paint with sumi ink and Asian watercolor on rice paper, combining traditional Chinese brush techniques with my own modern Western interpretation. This year, I’ll demonstrate a sketching technique using charcoal, as a preparatory step to Chinese brush painting. It works especially well with animals.

Medium: Mixed Media Sculpture & Watercolor
While technology invades every facet of our lives, pure visualization becomes even more important as a method for understanding our true place and purpose in the world.
The images I explore are inspired by books, dreams and by continuously questioning everything around me. Everything! I combine traditional watercolor techniques with archetypal characters and symbolic situations. These are part of an ongoing storyboard – a visualization to realization of my own mythology. It’s all a learning process. If your art isn’t teaching you something every day, you’re not pushing hard enough.

Medium: Paper Clay
Paper clay is an extension of my work carving blocks in printmaking. Using this totally different material, I create 2 & 3 dimensional forms out of a thin layer of paper clay. This clay is extremely easy to work with, light and dries quickly. With a cellulose and plastic base, it hardens on any gesso surface and can be painted with acrylic paints. Great for the beginning to advanced artists.

Medium: Book Arts
I am a studio artist with a degree in Fibers, so all materials are available to me! I make books and teach bookbinding, amongst many other things.
I am always interested in how materials feel in the hand and how light catches them, how they can be transformed under a needle, brush or knife, and how scraps can become embellishment.
