SUMMARY:Sashiko Washcloth Workshop Sashiko Hana-Fukin Embroidery Class
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will explore Sashiko Hana-Fukin\, a traditional Japanese embroidered cloth created using simple yet beautiful Sashiko stitching. Hana-fukin translates to “flower cloth\,” a square piece of fabric traditionally used in the home as a kitchen cloth\, tea towel\, or decorative textile. \nHana-fukin are typically made from cotton and stitched with repeating Sashiko patterns that are both functional and expressive. These designs often feature geometric or nature-inspired motifs\, worked with even\, rhythmic running stitches—traditionally without knots. While classic hana-fukin use white thread on indigo or neutral fabric\, modern interpretations embrace a wide range of colors. \nDuring class\, students will learn how these cloths were historically used and how they continue to serve as both practical household items and meaningful works of handcraft. A finished hana-fukin is approximately 12–13 inches square and can be used as a kitchen or tea cloth\, displayed decoratively\, gifted\, or kept as a personal stitching sampler. \nBeyond technique\, Sashiko hana-fukin carry cultural significance. They reflect values of mindful handwork\, durability\, and quiet beauty—celebrating repetition\, balance\, and care through stitch by stitch practice. This class offers a calm\, focused space to slow down\, learn a traditional craft\, and create something both useful and beautiful.

In this cozy\, creative workshop at Cup of Tea Tea House\, you’ll design a 4.5″ x 5″ fused glass art panel featuring sweet lovebirds\, playful animals\, or your own whimsical creature design. \nYou’ll learn the basics of fused glass including cutting\, layering\, and design techniques while building your one-of-a-kind piece. DESCRIPTION:Explore\, sense\, drink\, and honor oolong\, the tea that dances on our senses like fire and air\, revealing magic with every unfolding layer.\nStep into the world of oolong\, a tea of transformation and wonder. In this guided tasting\, we will explore oolong’s wide range of expressions\, from bright and floral to rich and roasted. Through mindful brewing and shared reflection\, we will follow oolong’s playful and flowing nature as it bridges the space between green and black tea\, inviting curiosity\, imagination\, and presence. \nThis gathering is offered with a suggested contribution of $35. In the spirit of inclusivity and balance\, you are welcome to offer what feels right for you\, whether that is $35\, $25\, or more if you have the means. Contributions above the suggested amount help make this experience accessible to those with financial need and sustain the ongoing care and energy poured into holding spaces like this. Every offering\, whether financial or energetic\, affirms the value of community supported education. \nWe also acknowledge the systemic barriers that have long limited access for BIPOC communities. To honor this\, a $15 option is available for BIPOC participants who would benefit from it. This is one way we commit to equity\, ensuring that diversity is not only welcomed but essential to the richness of the experience. \nIf the listed prices are still a barrier\, please reach out directly. Together we will grow through the shared beauty of tea\, reflection\, and connection. \nTo help us hold a mindful and welcoming space\, we ask participants to be considerate of sensory sensitivities by avoiding strong fragrances. This space is held with gentle awareness\, where we honor our own needs as well as those of others. By arriving with openness\, care\, and respect for each person’s boundaries\, we create a shared atmosphere where meditation\, tea\, and queer belonging can flourish. \nIn the spirit of reciprocity and uplifting community together\, five dollars from each participant will be donated to Q Center\, a nonprofit that supports LGBTQ2SIA+ communities through advocacy\, resources\, and safe spaces\, embodying tea’s spirit of connection\, reflection\, healing\, and belonging. \nThis gathering is guided by D’Guar (they/them)\, a trans person of color\, tea guide\, and community weaver rooted in Portland\, Oregon. Their journey has been devoted to exploring the depth and spirit of Camellia sinensis through mindful practice\, story\, and shared ritual. Through Water Fairy Tea\, they cultivate spaces where tea becomes a bridge into presence\, nature\, and belonging. Their offerings blend learning with reverence\, inviting participants to meet tea not just as a drink\, but as a living companion in personal discovery\, collective care\, and connection with the natural world. \nWe acknowledge that this work takes place on the traditional lands of the Multnomah\, Clackamas\, Chinook\, Kathlamet\, Tualatin\, Kalapuya\, Molalla\, and many other Indigenous ancestors and communities.
