This month’s discussions is presented by Mariah Rocker with the Oregon Black Pioneers\, titled ‘Displacing Black Portland: A History of Housing Discrimination.’ \n“People of African descent have called Portland home since the earliest days of non-Native settlement. However\, policies of systemic racism have led to waves of displacement and demolition within the city’s historically Black neighborhoods. The ripple effects of generations of housing discrimination continue to shape Portland’s demographics and Black Portlanders’ opportunities within a rapidly gentrifying city. \nThis program is offered by the Lake Oswego Public Library in cooperation with the Lake Theater & Café. Admission is free and no ticket is required (though food and drink purchase is encouraged to offset the cost to the Lake Theater). Doors open at 6:30\, the presentation begins at 7:00. DESCRIPTION:The Natural History Book Group was founded on the recognition that Indigenous peoples have maintained a deep and reciprocal relationship with the land now known as Lake Oswego for millennia\, the group acknowledges this history as an essential grounding for its work. Through participant-selected readings that focus on Traditional Ecological Knowledge\, members explore how literature and nonfiction can deepen our understanding of the watershed and its indigenous history\, while inspiring practical steps toward a more just relationship with both the land we call home and its original caretakers. \nLed by the Oswego Lake Watershed Council\, this group meets bi-monthly on the second Tuesday of every other month (January\, March\, May\, July\, September\, and November) at 5:00pm.
