DESCRIPTION:Written in 1936\, this light-hearted comedy has relevance for today in addressing the main theme of finding one’s own way in today’s complex society\, while lightly viewing such topics as distrust of government\, domestic terrorism and fear of foreign conflicts. \n“Grandpa” Vanderhof (Robert Lovitz) once worked in the competitive business world. One day\, he realized he was unhappy\, so he stopped working. Since then\, he spends his days catching and raising snakes\, watching graduation ceremonies\, visiting old friends\, and doing whatever else he wants. His daughter Penny (Marilyn Stacey) writes plays simply because a few years ago a typewriter was delivered to the house by accident. His son-in-law Paul Sycamore (Todd Hermanson) spends hours in the basement making illegal fireworks and playing with erector sets. His granddaughter Essie (Bonnie Auguston) sells candy and has been clumsily attempting ballet for over eight years. His grandson-in-law Ed Carmichael (Aiden Brown) plays the xylophone (or tries to) and accidentally distributes Marxist propaganda. \nJoining this free-for-all are Rheba (Caren Graham)\, the household cook; her unemployed boyfriend\, Donald (Shaun Hennessy); Essie’s opinionated Russian ballet instructor\, Mr. Kolenkhov (Mark Schwahn); Olga (Trisha Todd)\, a Russian Grand Duchess; Gay Wellington (Adrienne Southard)\, a heavy-drinking actress; Wilbur C. Henderson (Douglas Hout)\, a forlorn IRS employee; and Mr. De Pinna (Danny Bruno)\, a deliveryman who arrived 8 years ago and decided to stay. He now helps with the fireworks and dresses in Roman togas to pose for Penny’s portraits. All is somewhat calm until three men from the government (Christopher Sparks\, Dan Weiss\, and Erik James) visit to investigate Ed’s flyers. \nIn this crazy mix of characters\, there is also Alice (Taylor Jean Grady)\, Penny and Paul’s other daughter and\, apparently\, the only “normal” family member. She met Tony Kirby (Noah Matthew Rich) at his dad’s Wall Street investment firm\, and they’ve fallen in love. Culture shock and fireworks fly when Mr. Kirby (Jeremy Southard) and Mrs. Kirby (Wendy Martel) come to visit. But the message is clear: “Life’s pretty simple if you just relax\,” as Grandpa puts it. \nYou Can’t Take It With You is directed by Don Alder. The contestant who keeps at least one hand on a brand-new hardbody truck the longest gets to drive it off the lot. What initially seems like a mere publicity stunt soon becomes a soul-baring battle of wills. Only one can win\, but for all involved\, the truck holds the key to their own private American dream. \nThe mix of people in this contest includes: an unlikeable prior winner who is a bit racist; the son of an immigrant who wants to be a veterinarian; a USMC veteran; an older woman (with her husband for support) who really needs the money; a Texas evangelical; a beauty queen; an older man (and his wife as support) who is recovering from a fall from a big rig; and a few other folks. The backstory involves the faltering dealership\, lack of sales\, and unethical behavior by some of the staff. \nThe ensemble includes Melissa Gale\, Derek Gregerson\, Kate Potter\, Mike Dederian\, Andrew Stoffers\, Victoria Garcia\, Sam Babst\, Danny Caputo\, Mary Compton\, Evan Tait\, RJ Tofte\, Bryan Durden\, Jody Allen\, Margo Schembre\, and Jason Nuesa. \nArtistic Staff: Hands on a Hardbody is directed by Thomas C. DESCRIPTION:When an auto dealership in Longview\, TX\, launches an endurance contest\, ten economically strapped strangers embark on a journey that tests their hearts\, minds\, and bodies. The contestant who keeps at least one hand on a brand-new hardbody truck the longest gets to drive it off the lot. What initially seems like a mere publicity stunt soon becomes a soul-baring battle of wills. Jane embodies the immigrant success story and the fulfillment of her father’s all-American dream. But Jane’s life has always been colored by her aunt’s brutal murder during the fight for Indonesian Independence after WWII. Her mixed-race Indo parents were forced to flee their motherland\, clutching their baby girl. On his death bed\, believing Jane was his beloved sister\, her father implored her\, “Run!” \nNow Jane is sharing her family’s story that had been sealed in silence\, shame\, and assimilation. The same urge to cook nasi kuning and lempers inspired a journey across the Pacific Ocean to reconnect with family and lay flowers on her aunt’s grave. This Indonesian pilgrimage winds through a cousin’s living room in Jakarta\, a university classroom in Yogyakarta\, and a cemetery in Surabaya which holds the “welcome home” Jane never realized she needed on her way to defining both her family’s legacy and her own.
