Lunar New Year, celebrated by an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide, begins with the second new moon after the winter solstice. Marking the start of a new year in the Eastern Zodiac, with 2026 ushering in the Year of the Fire Horse, this holiday is known as Spring Festival (春节) in China and often referred to as Chinese New Year in America. While rooted in Chinese traditions, Lunar New Year is celebrated across many Eastern countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam (where it is called Tết), and South Korea (where it is known as Seollal). In each country, and increasingly in the United States, people honor the occasion with customs that emphasize family, food, and good fortune, reflecting shared themes of renewal and hope for the year ahead.

The event is organized by the Lake Oswego Public Library and the Lakeridge High School AAPI Club and is sponsored by the City of Lake Oswego, the Friends of the Lake Oswego Public Library, the Lake Oswego School District (LOSD), and LOSD’s Belonging program. Admission is free.

A livestream will also be available.

This event will take place at Lakeridge High School, located at 1235 Overlook Drive, Lake Oswego.  Please follow the signs to enter through the athletic building on the far east side of the school. For additional information, contact Allison Arnold at 503-534-5665 or [email protected].
